Jason was thinking.. that a brief before hand of course since there will be more then just 2 people running around with real guns and bullets.

some quick points I think should be covered. and some thoughts for consideration as well.
in the brief.. cover the 4 weapons safety rules.

1 treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
2 never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot. ( or kill)
3 keep your finger straight and off the trigger until your ready to shoot. (or kill)
4 keep your weapon on save until you intend to shoot. (or kill)

and 5, know your target and what lies beyond it.

no solo shooting unless the shooting line is cleared hot.
(spots for how ever many people you want shooting at once)

downrange is cleared.. then the "line" is declared hot.
shooting may commence until "cease fire" is called.
anyone may call a cease fire if the observe an unsafe act.

before anyone heads down to inspect their target the line must be cleared.. weapons on the ground or slung. if on the ground the weapon must be empty with magazine out, the bolt open or the slide locked back. if slung muzzle straight up or straight down. you shoot your own foot you deserve it for being stupid and i will laugh at you.

then people can head downrange check their targets cover the holes with tape or replace the targets. no one is allowed to load a weapon again until everyone is back behind the firing line.

This rule might be a little redundant.. but maybe people should be checked to make sure the weapon is unloaded and the chamber is empty before they leave the firing line.. not that they can't reload it later but more people have been " accidently" shot by empty guns then any other kind. and with so many differnt people potentially this is probably the safest way no accidents happen.. I know all these people are adults. but....... which means at least one person would have to be in charge of the firing line to make sure downrange is clear before weapons are loaded and the shooting commences and they call cease fire as well. and clear people to go down range to the targets.

if you get caught flagging (pointing your weapon) at someone with an unloaded weapon you get one warning. second time, case your shit and go...
you do it with a loaded gun no warnings, your gone. you do it to me with a loaded gun... we will case your guns and you can get them after you get outa the hospital. :)

That i think covers the basics. let me know if we need to add anything or remove or tone down anything. I don't really want to run this like a military rifle range but on the same token that is about the safest way to do it with all these differnt people with different levels of experience and safety expectations.

also no one under 18 unless accompanied by a parent? thats on you guys since you either make and or enforce all the rules.. but something to seriously consider.

I will probably be addeding some things to this list for purely safety reasons or if I decided I want to be a big meany

Please, Please, give me your imput.

I read every thing that you wrote and I agree with all of it... But some things that i would like to add and I hope that no one takes offense to it. First and this goes for everyone involved DO NOT TOUCH ANOTHER PERSONS GUN WITHOUT PERMISSION!!!!! Not only is it disrespectful, but some of us have sights and such that do not want them bumped off of line, along with the fact that it is not yours to be playing with. Also I know that it seems stupid, but if everyone could wear some sort of Orange vest, shirt, etc. that would make seeing everyone easier as well.

I also agree with your 18 years old thing, due to the fact that wisconsin law states that you cant own a firearm until you are 18 anyways, unless with a parent. Even during Deer Season a minor must be within sight of the accompaning gaurdian until they are of the age of 16 than it can be within shoughting distance.

Another thing i would like to add is that PLEASE do not drink any alchohol before the shoot!!!! Even though it the affects may seem to have worn off anything can happen.

Finally the last thing I Have to say is NO FOCKING AROUND!!!! These are real guns and people can really get hurt. I will NOT tolerate any fooling around because that is how accidents happen.

If this has offended anyone or pissed them off bummer. It would seem that you dont need to come than. These are all typical safety rules and I sont want to see anyone hurt while we are having a good time.

Agree with all^^^^^^^^^ No one leaves shooting position until chambers are cleared, weapons tabled, and range master has all clear!

Levi I think you should have a whistle and designate 2 others and if one of the three sound off all shooting is to cease immediately.

Here's my thoughts....Would like to split the day up in 3, 2 hour phases and change the start time to 9:30 A.M. *suggestions welcome*

Safety Brief, Weapons Check (9:30-10:00) ****Must Attend*****or stay home!!!!!!

Phase 1) 10:00 A.M. (Tower base) Shotguns, or pistols with bird shot...2 hr Targets (thrown, rolled and bounced clays)

Phase 2) 12:00-2:00 (Lower back woods, hezbolla base) Walkthrough tactical silouette range 6 station.

2:00-3:00 Lunch

Phase 3) 3:00-5:00 (lower backwoods road) 4 Stationary targets 2 positioned 100 and 200 yards with 6MM bullseye And 2 positioned 7 and 15 yards with 6MM bullseye.

We can designate one person to get field supplies ie: targets, clays etc...Divide that cost by number of people participating and this would be the cost for the day.

Already posted under 18 must be accompanied or sponsored by an adult attendee.

actually that sounds like a superb plan. we can also shorten or adjust if say people don't feel like doing shotguns for that long or there is lack of interest in the tactical course. though I doubt that will be the case.

I think that schedule will deffinatly work. we could also have short hard and dirty saftey brief for people who come later near the end of every stage. so if people can't make it till noon or something... but they have to wait in the safe zone untill the designated time for the next briefing...

I will break the outline down a little tighter and clearer and then print out a few copies for use that day.

Those rules sound pretty straight forward to me. Looking forward to being there on Sunday.

ok. Taking some time to make some notes on the shoot on sunday. Overall it went pretty well. But we had a small group and the majority were very familiar with firearms.

several idea's for the future, clean out the trap area a little better and put shooting benches out for each person to place their shotguns and the proper loads for them..
this does several things.. it makes a good solid shooting line, guns are not being moved back and forth to and from the firing line and the correct ammo will be used each time.

also if we adjust our setup slightly we could set stations to run at the same time trap and high powered rifles at the same time. kind of like how we ran the two pistol courses

also if/when we start getting a bigger, more regular turnout might want to turn it into a 2 day event with the first day being lessons for new shooters. and require pregistration to shoot.. that could wait a till we start getting more people and/or people that we don't know
but we might want to get the details of that worked out before we actually think we need it so its easy to impliment

First off...Thank You Levi, Scott and Chris. I thought the day went smashingly well. Seeing the report of the 8 year old killed in a gun accident that happened on another range the same day we held our shoot just re-inforces the firm safety commitment we must all have to continue these events. I like the ideas you have put forth Levi and agree. Anyone have a simple build plan for easy to place/move gun racks? Perhaps something with short rebar spikes that could be stepped into the ground on spot. I think a 4x8 sheet of plywood should be used for the 200 yard target to increase visability. I will be spot cutting some areas for trap to clean them up...Levi you are welcome to bring out your 9mm chainsaw :) I would like to hear everyones ideas on range layout, finalize and then move forward on a few simple standing type shooting platforms (standing rifle rest)as well as some permament placed target stands with backers.

Anyone got any ideas on how to build a moving target?

Moving forward my biggest question is on bringing in virgin shooters and the "can I use your gun and ammo question". It makes me feel very....Red, White and Blue to introduce a new shooter to firearms of any kind but As Scott and Levi found out if your gun is a favorite you can burn through allot of ammo not to mention the increased wear and tear on your weapon. Suggestions....Ideas....Smart A** Comments all welcome!
